Two desert routes, two very different experiences
Visitors planning their first Morocco desert journey often compare Zagora and Merzouga. Both can be reached on routes from Marrakech and both offer memorable nights in southern Morocco, but they are not interchangeable landscapes.
Merzouga: for the large Sahara dunes
Merzouga sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, which form the dramatic golden sand landscape many travellers picture when they think of a Sahara desert adventure. A private itinerary can include an evening camel experience and a stay in a camp, with comfort levels to be confirmed. From Marrakech, plan at least three days for a classic visit, preferably longer if you wish to reduce driving hours.
Zagora: the shorter southern escape
Zagora is commonly included in two-day excursions from Marrakech. The route crosses the High Atlas and follows the landscapes of the Draa Valley. A short tour works when your schedule is limited, but the dunes and distances are different from Merzouga. Do not choose Zagora expecting the same vast Erg Chebbi sand formations.
Which is more suitable for families?
The answer depends less on the destination than on the number of days you have. Very short itineraries can involve long road hours. Families with young children may prefer a slower three- to five-day tour with extra stops and appropriately selected accommodations.

- How many hours of driving should you expect each day?
- Are meals, guides, camel trekking and accommodation included?
- Does the camp have private bathrooms and the facilities you need?
- Can you alter pickup, drop-off and comfort arrangements?
