Marrakech to Fes via Merzouga: What to Expect on a Private Tour

A practical guide to the classic Marrakech to Fes Sahara crossing via Aït Ben Haddou, Dades and Merzouga.

A one-way crossing through Morocco’s remarkable landscapes

A private Marrakech to Fes desert journey can be an efficient way to connect two iconic cities while exploring southern Morocco along the way. Rather than returning to Marrakech, the route continues north from the Sahara through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas.

Day 1: High Atlas and kasbah country

Most suggested routes begin with a crossing of the High Atlas, a visit to the UNESCO-listed ksar at Aït Ben Haddou and a drive through Ouarzazate toward Skoura and the Dades Valley. The combination of mountain landscapes and historic earthen architecture makes the first day rewarding but relatively long.

Day 2: Gorges and Merzouga

Continue through the southern valleys and Todra Gorge before reaching Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. For many travellers, sunset at the dunes and a Sahara camp night are the highlights. Accommodation and any camel activity should be confirmed with your organiser.

Day 3: Ziz Valley, Middle Atlas and Fes

After the sunrise, the journey north crosses different terrain. The Ziz Valley, Midelt, Ifrane and cedar country provide a varied landscape on the way to Fes. As with the earlier days, driving times depend on traffic, weather and the number of stops.

Is three days enough?

It covers the essential route but involves long days. Four days can provide more time to explore the desert or the kasbah valleys. Families and photographers often appreciate the extra flexibility.

Before requesting a quote

Confirm your hotels, group size, luggage, accommodation preferences, guiding language and any dietary or mobility needs. A fully customised one-way tour can account for these details before bookings are confirmed.
