Discover the Sahara beyond Marrakech
Trade the energy of Marrakech for the varied landscapes of southern Morocco. This private three-day journey crosses the High Atlas, passes ancient earthen kasbahs and winds through dramatic gorges before reaching the dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. It is ideal when you want a classic Sahara experience and have three full days available, with the understanding that the outward and return drives are substantial.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Marrakech, Aït Ben Haddou and Dades Valley
Leave Marrakech and climb into the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka route, with scenic stops as road conditions allow. Visit Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified ksar noted for its traditional earthen architecture. Continue past Ouarzazate and Skoura, through kasbah landscapes and valleys, towards your overnight stay in the Dades area. The exact sightseeing order depends on departure time and the accommodation selected.
Day 2 — Todra Gorge, Erfoud and the Erg Chebbi dunes
Travel towards Tinghir and the limestone walls of the Todra Gorge, where short walks and photography stops may be possible. Continue via the southern oasis region towards Merzouga. As the light softens, enjoy the desert setting beside the dunes of Erg Chebbi. A sunset camel experience and a night in a desert camp can be included in your agreed itinerary. Please confirm the exact camp category, transfer, meals and activities in your personalised quote.
Day 3 — Sahara sunrise and return to Marrakech
Rise early if you wish to watch the dunes change colour at sunrise. After breakfast and the return from camp, begin the long journey back across southern Morocco and the High Atlas. Brief stops may be arranged, but this is primarily a travel day. Arrival time depends on traffic, season, weather and the agreed route.

Frequently asked questions
Does this visit the large Sahara sand dunes?
Yes. Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, known for extensive golden dunes. This is different from a shorter Zagora route.
Is three days comfortable for young children?
It depends on their age and tolerance for long car journeys. Families may prefer a four-day Merzouga itinerary to reduce the pace.
What should I bring?
Bring layered clothing, comfortable shoes, sun protection and a compact overnight bag for the desert camp. Nights can be cool outside the hottest months.
For a shorter southern itinerary, compare our two-day Zagora excursion. If you would rather finish in Fes, see the Marrakech to Fes desert crossing.
