Where to stay in Morocco: riads, hotels & desert camps.
Choosing where to stay shapes how you experience Morocco. A traditional riad in Marrakech’s medina feels very different from a modern hotel in Gueliz, a heritage property in Fes, a coastal guesthouse in Essaouira or a desert camp near the Erg Chebbi dunes. This guide explains the practical differences so you can select accommodation that fits your itinerary, comfort needs and budget.
How to choose accommodation for a private Morocco tour
The right property depends on more than a star rating. Consider where the vehicle can stop, whether your room is accessible, the travel time to attractions, breakfast and dining options, private bathrooms, air conditioning or winter heating, and the property’s cancellation conditions. For family travel, ask about connected rooms, child facilities and the location of stairs.
We can discuss preferred accommodation types as part of a luxury Morocco tour or a custom private itinerary. Properties shown here are categories and examples of travel settings, not confirmed hotel inventory or availability.
Where to stay across Morocco
Medina riad, Gueliz or Hivernage?
A riad inside Marrakech’s medina can offer intimate courtyard atmosphere and access to historic streets, but taxis often cannot reach its door. Gueliz offers a contemporary city district with easier car access, while Hivernage has more spacious hotels and resorts. Consider your plans for evening restaurants, airport transfers and walking.
Historic medina or modern hotel?
In Fes, a traditional medina property can be richly atmospheric yet require walking through narrow lanes. Modern districts may provide easier vehicle access. Ask in advance whether your riad helps with luggage transfer or offers a clear meeting point for a private driver.
Desert camp or dune-side hotel?
Desert camps range from basic tents to more comfortable options, but facilities vary widely. Check heating, private toilets, shower arrangements, transport across the sand and the distance from the dunes. Winter evenings can be extremely cold, so a warm room may matter more than decorative luxury.
Medina guesthouse or seaside hotel?
Essaouira is particularly appealing to travellers who appreciate the Atlantic breeze and a more relaxed pace. Medina houses offer easy access to historic lanes and shops; coastal hotels can be more convenient for vehicle arrival and beach walks. Wind and cool evenings are worth considering.
Mountain lodge and village guesthouse
Atlas stays offer remarkable scenery and a quieter atmosphere, but routes, road access and temperatures are different from the cities. Confirm how far the vehicle can travel, which meals are available, and whether trekking requires a separate qualified guide.
Rocky desert lodge or camp stay
Agafay is a rocky landscape near Marrakech, not the sand dunes of Merzouga. Camps can be convenient for sunset dinners or short romantic breaks. Some are on unpaved tracks; ask about accessibility, winter temperatures and transfer arrangements.
Five important questions before confirming your stay
1. Can your driver reach the entrance?
Many medina properties are located within pedestrian-only streets. A nearby gate may be the correct pickup location, with luggage assistance arranged separately.
2. What does the room actually include?
Confirm bathrooms, air conditioning or heating, bed types, room configuration and whether breakfast, taxes or other extras are included.
3. How does the season affect comfort?
The Sahara and mountains can get very cold at night in winter; coastal destinations may be windy; summer conditions can be extremely hot.
4. Is the location right for your itinerary?
A picturesque property can still add substantial driving time. Compare the location with your departure city, sightseeing priorities and transfer plans.
5. What are the booking conditions?
Ask about arrival times, deposits, cancellation rules, accessibility, minimum stays and whether accommodation is booked separately from transport.
Travelling as a family?
Ask about child-safe beds and stairs, family room layouts and a suitable vehicle for your luggage. Read about Morocco family tours.
Accommodation frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a riad and a hotel?
A riad is traditionally a townhouse structured around an internal courtyard or garden, often with an intimate scale. Hotels vary from small boutique properties to large resorts with extensive facilities.
Is a Merzouga desert camp the same as Agafay?
No. Merzouga is beside the Erg Chebbi dunes in the Sahara, while Agafay is a rocky desert landscape much closer to Marrakech.
Can the accommodation be included in my private tour?
Yes, accommodation may be included in a tailor-made quotation, subject to actual availability. The proposal must specify the property standard and services.
