5-day Morocco tour from Casablanca: what to expect

This private Casablanca-to-Marrakech tour is designed for travellers who want to experience Morocco’s distinctive cities and Sahara scenery within five days, without joining a fixed-departure coach group. The route combines the Atlantic coast, historic Fes, the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, the Ziz Valley, a night in the Merzouga desert and the kasbah landscapes on the way to Marrakech.

It is an ambitious journey covering significant distances, so the schedule prioritises meaningful highlights rather than claiming that every stop can be explored at length. Your driver can adjust photo breaks, lunch stops and departure times around your interests, the weather and the daylight. Accommodation choices, a licensed Fes guide and activities can be specified in your personal quotation.

Detailed 5-day Casablanca to Marrakech itinerary

Our suggested route includes a night in Fes, a night near Midelt, a Merzouga Sahara camp night and a night in the Dades Valley. It balances cultural sightseeing with the long distances between northern Morocco and the desert.

Day 1

Casablanca → Rabat → Fes

Meet your private driver at your Casablanca accommodation or Mohammed V International Airport, at an agreed time. If your arrival allows, begin with the spectacular seafront setting of the Hassan II Mosque. Continue to Rabat to see highlights such as Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Kasbah of the Udayas, according to opening times. Drive onward to Fes for an evening arrival and a first taste of the city’s traditional riads.

Planning note: A late flight arrival may require adapting the Rabat sightseeing or starting the tour the next morning.

Suggested overnight: Fes

Day 2

Fes medina → Ifrane → Azrou → Midelt

After breakfast, discover selected parts of Fes el-Bali with a local city guide if included in your chosen package. The old medina is known for its craft traditions, narrow lanes and historic architecture. In the afternoon, leave Fes for Ifrane and the cedar-forest region around Azrou, then continue through the Middle Atlas to Midelt. This is a shorter introduction to Fes rather than a full-day city tour.

Planning note: If you want a complete Fes sightseeing day, ask for the six-day version instead.

Suggested overnight: Midelt

Day 3

Midelt → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Merzouga Sahara

Travel south towards the dramatic palm groves of the Ziz Valley and the oasis landscapes near Erfoud. Reach Merzouga, gateway to the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, in time for your planned desert experience. Depending on your preferences and conditions, arrange a sunset camel trek or an appropriate alternative transfer to your selected camp. Enjoy dinner and a peaceful night in the Sahara; camp type, meals and activities are specified in your final booking details.

Planning note: Desert access and sunset timing depend on weather and seasonal daylight.

Suggested overnight: Merzouga desert camp

Day 4

Merzouga → Rissani → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

Wake early if you would like to watch the changing colours over the dunes. Depart Merzouga and travel west through the Tafilalt region towards Tinghir. Stop for a walk in the remarkable Todra Gorge, where high rock walls rise above the valley. Continue to the Dades area, known for its winding roads, traditional kasbahs and varied rock formations. Check into a guesthouse or hotel for the night.

Planning note: Mountain or gorge viewpoints are selected according to road conditions and your preferred pace.

Suggested overnight: Dades Valley

Day 5

Dades Valley → Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Marrakech

Travel through the Valley of Roses and the kasbah region towards Ouarzazate. Continue to Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed earthen ksar famous for its historic architecture and striking desert-edge setting. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka route, when open and safe, and descend towards Marrakech for hotel or riad drop-off. This is a long travel day, so the duration of individual visits is adjusted to your departure time, traffic and mountain conditions.

Planning note: Ending in Casablanca instead of Marrakech requires extra driving and should be agreed when planning your trip.

Tour ends: Marrakech

Best time to travel and practical advice

Spring and autumn are popular for Sahara journeys, with generally milder daytime temperatures. Summers can be intensely hot near Merzouga; winter mornings and desert nights can be cold. Mountain roads can be affected by snow, rain or temporary closures, especially in winter.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, layers for the desert, sunscreen and a small overnight bag. Set aside enough time on your final day if you plan to connect with a flight from Marrakech. For winter, New Year or holiday dates, check accommodation availability early.

Frequently asked questions about the 5-day Casablanca tour

Can I really visit the Sahara in five days from Casablanca?

Yes. A private one-way route via Fes, Midelt, Merzouga and Dades is feasible within five days, but it involves substantial road travel. For more time in the medina, desert or mountains, consider extending to six or seven days.

Does the tour start at Casablanca airport?

Pickup can be arranged from Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) or a Casablanca hotel. A late arrival may require adapting the first day’s programme; share your flight time when requesting a quote.

Does the tour finish in Casablanca or Marrakech?

The suggested tour finishes in Marrakech. Returning to Casablanca is possible on request but adds a long transfer and may require a different itinerary or extra day.

Is the Merzouga camel ride mandatory?

No. The desert experience can be discussed when planning the trip. If you prefer not to ride a camel, ask about an alternative transfer method suitable for your camp and local conditions.

Are hotels, desert camp, breakfast and dinners included?

Inclusions depend on the accommodation and package selected. Your personalised quotation will specify the exact riads or hotels where available, camp category, meals, transport and activities.

Can this 5-day tour be adapted for children?

Yes, the pace, stops and accommodation can be discussed for a family itinerary. Bear in mind that the route contains long driving days, especially across the Atlas Mountains.

How far is Casablanca from the Sahara?

Merzouga is far inland from the Atlantic coast. The tour uses staged overnight stops in Fes and Midelt rather than attempting a direct transfer, allowing time to see more of the country.

Can I add Chefchaouen or a full day in Fes?

You can request those highlights, but fitting both into this five-day Sahara route would make the schedule excessively rushed. We recommend a longer private itinerary if they are priorities.
