Why choose this New Year experience?

A Sahara New Year is as much about the route as the evening itself. The passage through Aït Ben Haddou country, Ouarzazate and dramatic southern valleys shows how Morocco changes from snow-dusted mountain landscapes to arid palm oases. On arrival near Merzouga, dunes replace the rocky plains. The location of your camp, its room type, heating and private bathroom facilities are particularly important in winter.

Every celebration has different admission rules, special menus and availability. We prepare a tailor-made proposal for your party and explain the services, dates and quotation before you commit. A website enquiry is not a confirmed reservation, and neither a special show nor a particular hotel is guaranteed until reconfirmed with the supplier.

THE EXPERIENCE · DAY BY DAY

Your suggested private itinerary

This is a sample programme. We adapt timing, venues and stops after checking winter conditions and bookings.

Day 1

30 December — Atlas Mountains and Dades

Leave Marrakech in the morning. Travel through the High Atlas towards Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, with practical breaks and sightseeing where road and daylight conditions allow. Overnight in the Dades area or an equivalent southern stop.

Crossing the High Atlas: the road from Marrakech offers panoramic viewpoints and a chance to appreciate traditional earthen architecture around Aït Ben Haddou. The journey continues past Ouarzazate and southern kasbah landscapes towards Dades. Request a longer guided stop only if the departure time allows it; your overnight accommodation is confirmed before travel.

Day 2

31 December — Todra and Sahara sunset

Continue through the southern landscape to Merzouga, aiming for a dune-side arrival before sunset. Discuss an optional camel approach or 4×4 transfer to the camp. A special dinner or cultural programme can be requested but depends on the operator.

From gorges to golden dunes: travel through the Todra Gorge region, then on towards Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Depending on your camp, you may arrive by approved 4×4 transfer or choose an optional camel experience. Aim to be settled before sunset so there is time to enjoy the desert scenery.

Day 2 · NYE

Midnight in the desert

Enjoy the agreed evening at your chosen camp. Some camps provide music or a festive meal, while others focus on a quieter night beneath the stars. The exact entertainment and drinks should be specified in the written confirmation.

New Year’s Eve atmosphere: desert camps may offer a special meal, traditional music or a more tranquil evening beneath the stars. We will identify the actual venue and any festive programme, drinks and supplements in your written offer. Bring warm layers as late December nights can be very cold.

Day 3

1 January — Sunrise and return

Rise for the first dawn of the year if conditions allow, then begin the long road journey back to Marrakech. The suggested return shown on the map runs through Rissani, Alnif, N’Kob and Agdz to Ouarzazate, then crosses the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka towards Marrakech. These are route towns, not a promise of a sightseeing visit at every location; final routing depends on road and winter conditions. Avoid a fixed evening flight connection because winter daylight and traffic can affect timing.

First dawn and return: watch the sunrise if you wish, then begin the long return via southern villages and the Draa–Agdz region. The mountain crossing towards Marrakech is affected by daylight, road conditions and traffic. Keep your evening flexible rather than arranging a fixed flight or paid activity.

What to know before booking

Expect cold nights, sometimes close to freezing, even when daytime sunshine feels mild. Pack warm layers, comfortable footwear, a torch and power bank. Allow for extensive driving and reduced winter daylight. Accommodation and festive-event availability for 31 December must be checked before acceptance.

If travelling on New Year’s Eve, book early and allow time for availability checks, deposit requirements and return-travel planning. Transfers, special dinners, guiding, camel rides and overnight accommodation are included only if itemised in your final offer.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers for planning your private Morocco experience. Select a question to read the details.

Does this tour include a guaranteed New Year’s Eve party?

No. The proposed camp, festive dinner, music and any entertainment are confirmed in the personalised quote only after checking availability.

Can families travel on this route?

Yes, subject to an appropriate vehicle, accommodation and realistic expectations about long driving days and cold nights.

Can I start from Fes?

Ask for an alternative private route from Fes; the programme and nights will differ from the Marrakech schedule.

Explore the practical details before you book. Each private tour is tailored to your needs, and exact inclusions are always confirmed in writing.

Marrakech to Merzouga: the three-day Sahara route

Is a three-day Marrakech–Merzouga return trip tiring?

Yes, this is a substantial road journey, particularly the return on 1 January. The programme includes scenic breaks, but the distance cannot be made short simply by using private transport.

What makes Merzouga different from Agafay?

Merzouga is a gateway to the high Erg Chebbi dunes in the Sahara, while Agafay near Marrakech is primarily rocky and hilly. Merzouga is the choice for major sand dunes; Agafay requires far less driving.

Where is the first overnight stay?

The proposed first night is in the Dades region after crossing the Atlas. The exact property, room category and meals are identified in your personalised quote.

Can we stop at Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate?

These are planned points on the outward route. The available sightseeing time depends on departure, daylight, road conditions and any local guide you request.

How do we reach the camp near Erg Chebbi?

Camp access depends on its location. A camel experience may be offered, but an approved 4×4 or other vehicle transfer can be requested where available. The method is confirmed in your booking.

Will there be a festive dinner on 31 December?

Only if your chosen camp or accommodation confirms it and your quote includes it. We will identify any special meal, music or programme and its price; fireworks and performances cannot be assumed.

How cold are Sahara nights around New Year?

The temperature can fall sharply after sunset. Pack a warm jacket, layers and closed shoes, and request clear information about your camp’s insulation, bedding and heating.

Does the return use the same route?

The proposed return may travel through Rissani, Alnif, N’Kob and Agdz towards Marrakech, rather than retracing every outward stop. The driver can change the route for safety, weather and timing.

Can we return in time for a flight on 1 January?

We advise against a tight evening flight connection. The drive is long and involves mountain roads; an extra night in Marrakech provides a better margin.

Are luxury camp tents with private bathrooms available?

They can be requested subject to dates and availability. The exact property, heating and sanitation standard, bed setup and supplement will be explained in the proposed accommodation.

Can children join the tour?

Families can request this journey, but young travellers should be comfortable with long drives and cold evenings. Child seats, breaks and suitable sleeping arrangements should be agreed in advance.

Could you make the itinerary more relaxed?

Yes. Adding a night or more gives additional time for scenic stops, camp relaxation and the return journey. A longer private Sahara tour can be quoted if you prefer slower travel.

Prices, bookings and travel arrangements

Is the displayed starting price the final amount?

No. The ‘from’ price is an indicative guide only. The final quotation depends on dates, travel party, accommodation or dinner venue, vehicle, New Year’s Eve supplements and requested extras. No rate or availability is guaranteed until confirmed in writing.

What will be included in our private booking?

Your personalised offer sets out transport, pickup and return points, lodging or venue, meals, guided services, any additional activities and relevant exclusions. Please rely on the final inclusions list rather than assuming every experience mentioned on the website is part of the package.

When is the booking officially confirmed?

An enquiry or quotation is not a confirmed reservation. The booking is confirmed only when the selected suppliers have accepted the arrangements, any required payment and conditions have been fulfilled, and you receive written confirmation.

How early should we request a New Year booking?

Enquire as early as convenient, because the festive period often has limited accommodation and special-event capacity. We check availability individually; early contact improves planning options but does not guarantee any hotel, camp, restaurant or event.

Can we customise departure time, travel pace and activities?

Yes, private arrangements can be tailored to your priorities within realistic driving times, weather and venue availability. Changes to dates, route, accommodation or excursions may alter the cost and should be agreed before the booking is confirmed.

Are travel insurance, tips and entrance tickets included?

Do not assume so. Travel insurance, gratuities, attraction tickets, optional activities and specialised local guides are included only where your confirmed quotation specifically lists them. Check your personal travel insurance for winter travel and any optional adventure activities.

What happens when bad winter weather affects the itinerary?

Driver and guest safety comes first. Snow, ice, wind, road closures or delayed suppliers can require a revised route, later arrival or replacement activity. Any change and its financial implications are handled according to the confirmed terms and suppliers involved.

What payment and cancellation conditions apply?

Deposits, final-payment dates, changes, cancellation fees and any non-refundable festive arrangements are stated in your individual quotation. Terms can differ among transport, camps, hotels and event venues; please review them before accepting the booking.
